Mike Stermitz - Experienced Environmental Inspector
Throughout his career in environmental science and inspection, Mike Stermitz has worked to protect waterways and communities from the effects of pollutants. He entered the profession as a graduate of the associate of applied science program in environmental technology at Montana Tech, having previously served as a fisheries technician and later as a game warden for Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks. After receiving his degree, Mike Stermitz began working as a lead environmental inspector for such organizations as Louis Berger and High Plains Environmental Center.
Through both organizations, Mike Stermitz evaluated potential pollution situations and reported violations of environmental regulations to appropriate government agencies. He developed corrective action plans as well as preventive plans and preemptive regulations, while also following up on prior violation sites to ensure effective cleanup and a return to more acceptable readings. In 2000, he left the private sector to oversee similar processes as an environmental scientist with the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes in Montana.
Mike Stermitz then turned his focus to water quality and waterway preservation. As a water quality specialist with the Montana Department of Environmental Quality, he assessed streams, rivers, and lakes to determine qualification for impaired waterbody status. He has since returned to private service, first as a conductor of stormwater pollution prevention plan (SWPPP) evaluations and most recently as an on-call environmental inspector for oil and gas projects.
